Canceling university classes and other social distancing measures aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19 could have an unintended public health consequence: reducing the states and nations blood supply.
Stacy Sime, president and CEO of Lifeserve Blood Center, said as of Wednesday, nine blood drives had been canceled, reducing collections by about 275 units of blood. And we anticipate that growing really over the next few days because I think people will start to react to some of the decisions that are being made now, she said.
This is actually a national concern and when you think about it, it makes sense because the public health strategies that are being used are social distancing, encouraging businesses to work remotely, no big events, Sime said. Businesses are implementing no visitor policies, and that includes blood-bank staffs who are trying to collect donations, she said.
The move by universities to keep students at home and offer classes online after spring break is also expected to reduce the blood supply. And so in the months of March, April and May, about 30 percent of the blood supply collected by the three blood centers that service the hospitals in the state of Iowa are supplied by education accounts, she said. So theres serious concern.

(18,470 posts)They told her they need her type of blood pretty bad right now. Even though she's getting up in years I'm not about to get in her way about that given how strongly she feels about giving blood. Especially now when it's really needed. Wouldn't be enough of me left to bury afterwards if I tried.

(63,324 posts)to my continuing to donate on my regular schedule. But they live a long ways away.
I give at the UI Hospital. The donor center is smack in the middle of the hospital. If it were on the periphery I would have no qualms about giving, but walking through those halls is a bit freaky.
I am O negative. Guessing that is probably what your mom is. Always needed.
I gave Tuesday after much thought. Next scheduled is April 28th. Since Reynolds is doing almost nothing to stop the spread of the disease, by that time I expect the numbers to be vastly scarier.
Much thanks to your mom for donating. It is really needed now.

(18,470 posts)I think she's going to keep going as long as she can and the donor center staff are willing to take her.
