Today I’m thrilled to announce that the reports are true: I am running for Congress in Iowa’s first district.

Here in northeast Iowa, we have a proud history of community, hard work, and perseverance. As a local journalist, I spent over twenty years reporting on just that -- Iowans who rose up to meet extraordinary challenges in life and refused to settle for less. I’ve traveled across the state to hear and tell your stories, and I’ve seen firsthand just how tough Iowans can be.

It’s clear that Iowa needs a leader in Congress who will fight with the same grit and determination that we demonstrate in our communities everyday. It's time we had a representative who leads the right way -- by looking out for one another and helping a neighbor in need.

My story is the same as many Iowans: I grew up on a farm, and my family counted every penny to make sure there was food on the table and the bills were paid. We didn’t have much, but my parents raised me to look out for our neighbors, stand up for what's right, and always lend a helping hand. I’ve brought that work ethic to every job I’ve had -- as your local news reporter, as a State Senator, and as a mother.

Our district deserves leaders who will do the hard work it takes to get things done in Washington. Instead of someone who blocks legislation that would help Iowans here in the First, we need leaders who will work to support Iowa businesses, expand health care access, and continue to grow our economy.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - State Senator Liz Mathis announced on Tuesday she will run for Iowa’s First Congressional District, challenging first-term Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson.

Mathis was a journalist and television anchor for 27 years before becoming a State Senator.

“I’ve spent decades listening and telling stories as a journalist and I’ve helped fix problems in our communities as a state senator and non-profit leader,” said Liz Mathis. “But lately, I’ve heard from so many Iowans who are concerned about the partisanship and conflict they’re seeing in Washington. It’s clear Iowans want leaders who care about fairness and honesty, who want to make sure businesses, farmers and workers succeed and who want to see communities thrive so that our kids and grandkids inherit an even better Iowa. I’m running because Iowans deserve better leadership and a member of Congress who listens to their concerns and delivers results.”
