Miami Co. to pay $100,000 in lawsuit settlement with counseling center
PERU Miami County has agreed to pay $100,000 to Four County Counseling Center to settle a lawsuit in which the nonprofit mental-health organization claimed the county owed it $182,000 in back payments.
The counseling agency, which is designated by the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction as the countys community mental-health center, filed a lawsuit last year alleging the county had failed to pay the required amount owed to it since 2004.
As a mental-health center, the state requires Miami County to annually pay Four County based on a fixed-funding formula levied against the countys taxable property.
For 12 years, the mental-health agency said the county underpaid what is required by the states taxing formula. According to the lawsuit, the most recent underpayment came in 2015, when the county owed Four County $155,750, but only paid the agency $120,000 a shortfall of $35,750.
