Biss declares victory over Boarini in mayoral election
Shortly before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, mayoral candidate Jeff Boarini called incumbent Daniel Biss to concede the election, and Biss declared victory in front of an audience of supporters at Bluestone restaurant on Central Street. With 44 of 45 precincts reporting and counting early vote totals and mail-in ballots received through Tuesday, Biss was up by nearly 4,000 votes, taking 62% of the ballots cast to Boarini’s 38%.
“A few minutes ago, Jeff Boarini called me. He placed a very classy and professional, collegial call,” Biss said. “He conceded the election, and we talked about how we can work together going forward to make Evanston a better place for all.”
Boarini also addressed supporters at his 924 Davis St. campaign office, saying it was the end of the road for his run for mayor but not the end of his civic work in Evanston.
“Part of the reason why I ran was because it seemed like the system is sort of a closed loop — no way for residents to really get into it,” Boarini said. “So I tried to get in as mayor. I failed at that. But I still believe that the city would benefit from much greater input from residents here, and if I could work with him [Biss] in some way in that regard, I’d be happy to do that.”
