We want to spend four nights on Kauai next spring. Where would you recommend as a home base? We want to see the canyon, sunsets and, if possible, whales.

(3,913 posts)Hanalei! This is my favorite spot on the earth. Lots of local people do vacation rentals, which is the best way to go in my opinion.
Here is a google search:

Staying in places like the North Shore is awesome, but personally they are way too touristy.
If you want something different, check out the West side of the island. Much of the area is still primarily agricultural, so you get a feel for real towns and real local color. There are options you can find online for renting houses or apartments. I also recommend this great local hotel: http://www.waimea-plantation.com/.
From here you can check out historic Hanapepe town, drive up to Waimea Canyon, hike the trails in Koke'e State Park, and journey to the secluded beach at Polihale.
