GOP Lawmakers Call For Budget Hearing To Clarify State Deficit

With only a few weeks until the election and the majority of the state legislature possibly at stake, Republicans are questioning whether Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is hiding a $133 million shortfall.

Republicans called Monday for an informational hearing to clarify the exact size of the state's budget deficit in the coming weeks, before Election Day.

Lawmakers said they would seek testimony from the three top arbiters of the state's fiscal health — the governor's budget office, the state comptroller and the legislature's nonpartisan fiscal office.

No bipartisan legislative hearing was set as of Monday afternoon, but Republicans, who are in the minority in both chambers of the legislature, said they would move ahead with their own hearing if necessary.
