Gov. Lamont says a cut in the gasoline tax is possible -- if the General Assembly approves electronic tolls


With less than four weeks left in the legislative session, Democrats say that a future cut in the state’s gasoline tax is becoming a key factor in whether to approve electronic highway tolls.

Gov. Ned Lamont did not include a gasoline tax cut in his budget in February, but he now says he is open to the idea. The tax cut is included in the latest version of a comprehensive bill that is being written behind closed doors and has not yet been publicly released, officials said Friday.

“Once we get the tolling revenues up and operating, once those revenues come in, yeah, we’d look at the gasoline as one way of mitigating things,'' Lamont told reporters Friday.

“We’ve definitely put that on the table, once we get the tolling up and running,'' Lamont said in an interview later in the day
