Anti-trans candidates largely flopped in CA primaries
The outcomes in the two races add to the growing electoral evidence that voters are not swayed by anti-trans or anti-LGBTQ rhetoric. Another example where such efforts fell flat was in the heated Democratic primary race to succeed retiring Congressmember Darrell Issa (R-Vista) in the 48th Congressional District straddling Riverside and San Diego counties.
Navy Reserve officer Ammar Campa-Najjars (D) campaign had tried to argue in a memo that bisexual San Diego City Councilmember Marni von Wilpert had no chance of winning the Southern California House seat because of her sexual orientation. She not only trounced the now four-time electoral loser who announced last week that his political career is permanently over and pointedly did not include von Wilpert among the Democratic House candidates he named in bold and urged people to vote for in his concession statement but von Wilpert was just named to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committees coveted Red to Blue program.
It means that party leaders not only see von Wilpert as having a strong chance of flipping the district to the Democratic column come November 3, they also plan to funnel financial support toward her campaign coffers. She is running against Republican San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond, whom von Wilpert and the DCCC have decried as a MAGA extremist who will be a vote for the anti-LGBTQ policies of the Trump administration.
Marni traveled to every part of the district and made it clear that she would fight to lower costs, expand healthcare, protect LGBTQ+ rights, and put working families first. The DNC is ready to help her flip this seat from red to blue, take back the House, and deliver for communities across California, stated Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin.
