Egg shortage leaves S.F. shoppers scrambling

San Francisco Chronicle / Dec 11, 2024

Some San Francisco grocery stores have begun limiting the number of eggs customers can buy amid a nationwide dairy shortage spurred by the outbreak of H5N1 avian flu, commonly known as bird flu.

Several major Bay Area supermarket chains, including Whole Foods, Safeway and Trader Joe’s, did not name bird flu or blame the virus for the apparent lack of eggs on their shelves. But for the second winter in a row, eggs are in short supply as the virus wreaks havoc on egg-laying commercial chicken flocks across the U.S.

The United States Department of Agriculture warned that egg prices are likely to remain high through the holiday season as newly discovered bird flu cases continue to reduce poultry populations in California and across the country, with more than 100 million birds culled since the beginning of the outbreak nearly two years ago.

In San Francisco, egg shelves in some grocery stores have grown increasingly sparse.

I Love Eggs to Eat for Nutrition. Eggs are also used in Makeup and Paint, so we need to ask whether the eggs used in makeup are pasteurized. Also, is this why there is an egg shortage? Is the makeup and paint industry buying up more eggs?
