The California Highway Patrol impounded more than 50 vehicles over the past two weekends as they continue a crackdown on so-called "street takeovers" in Oakland, including one that recently blocked traffic on the Bay Bridge, authorities said. ... Officials in the Bay Area, as well as throughout the state, have been challenged by a growing trend of street takeovers, also known as "sideshows," in which participants effectively shut down roadways or intersections to perform stunts in vehicles.
As part of an ongoing, targeted effort to combat the problem, CHP officers have been out in force over the past two weekends, making arrests and seizing cars from people accused of taking part in the illicit events. The efforts resulted in at least 22 arrests, and 52 cars were impounded, according to the agency and representatives of Gov. Gavin Newsom's office.
A "street takeover" unfolds along West Grand Avenue, beneath the 880 Freeway, in Oakland on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024.

CHP Golden Gate Division Chief Don Goodbrand issued a stern warning to those taking part in street takeovers. ... "Using our freeway systems as a place for these types of dangerous activities is unacceptable," he said. "Working with our allied agency partners, we will continue to use all available technologies to identify people and vehicles involved in these incidents and hold them accountable for their actions."
