Photo of fake sign in downtown SF appearing to mock CA retail theft law goes viral

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A sign was posted a few days ago outside of the Louis Vuitton store in downtown San Francisco. Photos of the sign began to circulate on social media and have since gone viral — one X post having more than 7.7 million views.

The sign, which reads “stolen goods must remain under $950,” appears to mock retail theft law in California. In the state, retail thefts are prosecuted as a felony only if the value of the stolen items exceeds $950. Retail theft valued less than that is charged as a misdemeanor, which has been the case since voters passed Proposition 47 in 2014.

The sign was confirmed to be posted outside of the designer store, according to fact-checking website Snopes. The San Francisco Police Department said the sign was unauthorized and was later removed.

No, SF Didn't Erect Street Sign Saying 'Stolen Goods Must Remain Under $950'

A sign outside a Louis Vuitton store telling thieves any items they steal must cost less than $950 caused a stir on social media.

…walks into stores and steals shit without repercussions. As far as I’m concerned it is organized crime that should get racketeering charges so they can be upgraded in a big way so they can be disposed of.

The Chinese have it partially right: corrupt executives get a damned brutal treatment, too.

I think a CEO who rips off workers for thousands of dollars should end up in the same very unpleasant place as someone who pulls out a gun and holds up a store. Indeed, wage theft and corporate corruption steal far more money, but that doesn't excuse this bullshit of anything under a thousand being slap on the hand.

The street crime does terrorize local populations and destroys quality of life. They need to be punished aggressively and severely. Like they go to prison until they can achieve a masters degree in prison. Maybe they’ll be useful after that. Can’t do it? Stay there.
