Arkansas Health department reports flu spread is intensifying, three deaths since October.

The Arkansas Department of Health announced another flu-related death in its weekly disease report, the third death since Oct. 1. The report also noted an increase in flu spread to the “moderate” level, up from the previous week’s “low.”

The health reports lag behind a week, meaning the most recent data addresses illnesses reported from Nov. 5-Nov. 11. During that period, the ADH reported 120 positive flu cases and 10 hospitalizations. All three deaths reported were individuals at least 65 years old.

The 2023-2024 flu season is already looking much different than last season. By this time last year, the health department had reported 14 deaths and more than 7,000 positive illnesses. A fraction of that — 506 cases — have been reported this season.

Based on maps in the health department’s report, current flu intensity in Arkansas is similar to the spread elsewhere in the country. Southern states like Louisiana, Georgia and Florida are showing signs of more intense spread.
