Tucson protest highlights concerns over Minneapolis shooting, immigration enforcement nationwide

Steady rainfall did not deter the of demonstrators who gathered in downtown Tucson on Saturday, Jan. 24.

Protesters lined Congress Street near the DeConcini Federal Courthouse to object to recent immigration enforcement actions around the country — including a deadly encounter earlier that day in Minneapolis involving U.S. Border Patrol officers.

Minnesota officials identified the man who was killed as Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident and ICU nurse. Earlier this month, another Minneapolis resident, Renee Macklin Good, 37, was also fatally shot during an encounter with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Saturday’s incident marked the third shooting involving federal immigration agents in Minneapolis this month.

Demonstrators in Tucson held signs reading “No Kings” and “Stop ICE killings.”
