6 cases of Omicron COVID-19 variant reported in Maricopa County
On Monday, health officials confirmed that 6 cases of the Omicron COVID-19 variant have been found in Maricopa County.
According to the Maricopa County of Public Health, 3 separate clusters of cases were identified in adults ranging in age from their late teens to their 60s. None of those cases had traveled internationally recently, health officials said. None of the six have serious illness or been hospitalized, and are all in isolation recovering. Earlier this month, the first case of the Omicron variant was reported in Yavapai County.
With these six cases confirmed and with no travel history, its clear that the Omicron variant is here in our community and spreading, said Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, Medical Director for Disease Control. We know that COVID-19 vaccines have remained highly effective at preventing serious illness and death, even when new strains develop. Thats why its critical that all eligible residents get vaccinated and boosted as soon as possible and take other precautions to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe.
Health officials are still completing case investigations, but say that most of the 6 were fully vaccinated. The County is reaching out to anyone who were in close contact with the six, and ensuring that isolation and quarantine protocols are being followed.
