Volodymyr Zelensky
President of Ukraine
Four years of virtual stalemate in Ukraine. Now both Kyiv and the Kremlin are trying to turn the war in Iran to their own advantage. President Zelensky visited the Middle East, offering battle-tested expertise on fending off Iran's drone attacks. Meanwhile, Russia is reportedly backing Iran with critical intelligence and weapons support and, for now, gains from soaring global oil prices. President Zelensky says every dollar Putin collects is more fuel for his war. Indeed, Russia is daily launching a new barrage of ballistic missiles and drones as civilian deaths surge in Ukraine. And despite Trump's promise of a quick peace deal, his personal negotiators are currently tied up with stop-and-start negotiations in Iran. In better news for Kyiv, the election defeat of Hungary's Viktor Orbán is unblocking a critical 90-billion-Euro loan for Ukraine from the European Union. President Zelensky joined Christiane from the Presidential Office.

Timothy Snyder
Historian / Author, "On Freedom"
The election defeat of Hungarian Prime Minister and self-styled illiberal democrat Viktor Orbán is seen as a major setback for right-wing politics in Europe as well as the United States, where the Trump administration continues to exert pressure on key democratic institutions. Timothy Snyder is an acclaimed historian of authoritarianism. Snyder sees a clear line between the conflict abroad and the angry political climate in America, warning that President Trump may exploit the war to cement his grip on power. Professor Snyder joins Christiane to talk about this precarious moment for democracy.

Tjada D'Oyen McKenna
CEO, Mercy Corps
In Sudan millions of people are trying to survive on just one meal a day, according to a new report published by humanitarian organizations. Many Sudanese have resorted to eating leaves and animal feed as the country's critical food-producing regions struggle under severe aid cutbacks. Tjada D'Oyen McKenna, CEO of Mercy Corps, joins the show to discuss the agencies' report and what she witnessed on a recent trip to Sudan.
