Related: About this forumSt. Vincent Cathedral, St. Malo, France
This is a cathedral that gave to blessing to Jaques Cartier, 1530ish for his voyage to discover Quebec and the St. Laurance river. Some one I learned about in my grade school history classes. There is a commemorative plaque on the floor. It started out as Roman construction and was converted to gothic. The Roman arches weren't as strong as they could have been so you can see remnants of them in the church today. We had a sunny day so we got some good side lighting inside. We also got to hear their organ while the organist was practicing.

Don't know how often the light hits the statue of Mary.

Side lighting through the stained glass.

The remnants of Roman arches.

(7,065 posts)I wish I could say it was planned but I don't remember if I noticed her being in the light like that.
Some times the magic works.

(7,065 posts)We feel really lucky. My wife got a job in Germany the year before the Trump I election. We had planned to travel around Europe when we retired but jumped quickly. I retired and we have been here for nearly 11 years now.
It is great to be able to get to many places without too much hassle.

So it was a surprise to see the plaque in the church.

(7,065 posts)is a bit different that US history of the same era. Gave me an early lesson in how countries shape the narrative.
When were you in Ottawa? I was at the , the now closed AFB Rockcliffe from about 1956 to 1965.
My father, who had emphysema, migrated to Phoenix when he retired.

(132,185 posts)We were neighbours. Did you know the Tremblays of AFB Rockcliffe? Mrs. Was like a second mom to us. We adored her. They had a daughter named Linda.
They totally rebuilt the base into mixed market housing and done a good job of it.

(7,065 posts)I had heard it was converted to housing of some type.
The Tremblay name seems familiar. But I don't recall.
I lived on Bishop Blvd and went to Viscount Alexander, no longer there.
My parents knew a Couple named Gly(i)don, daughter Dana.
Fun pace to be before HS.

(7,065 posts)in what was called Eastview. Looks like it has a French name now Vanier? Just like Hull across the river is now Gatineau.
That is a much better name than Hull.

(132,185 posts)base.
Yes the base is a huge housing development that has lots of kinds of housing (I hope subsidized too) and playgrounds everywhere for kids.
Hull and neighboring towns Aylmer, Chelsea and Wakefield were all named after towns near Boston where Philemon Wright, founder of Hull, was originally from. Hull has been renamed Gatineau, Wakefield renamed Lapeche which makes sense since they are on the Quebec side. Eastview is still Vanier, though the city of Vanier itself has been swallowed up by the City of Ottawa as has Rockcliffe Park been, but they still are called by their neighbourhood names.

Some times you get lucky with the light.
I haven't been in many Cathedrals when there has been good light and good stained glass to slay over the walls.
I did manage to get similar light in the Brutalist church in Le Havre. Pics to come.
