(52,357 posts)My poinsettia's branches broke by the time I got it home from Trader Joe's so I decided to think of a silver lining and I took the red petals and green leaves off of them, put them on my floor/carpet and thought of using them for my hand made Christmas cards. I looked into drying them via Google but I do not have silica gel so I'm pressing them in between paper towels "to dry for 2 weeks" instead. It's been 2 days and they are getting dried up. Now I'm trying to figure out how to preserve the color until Christmas. I read that a clear fixative, like hair spray, will work. Since I am an illustrator I use hairspray as a fixative all the time...cheap too. I don't want the color to bleed or the moisture from the hairspray to make them moist again. What do you suggest?

(5,499 posts)The flowers dried within a week or so and still look stunning after more than a month. Their structure is more dense and fibrous than poinsettia flowers, which are leaflike in structure. I've noticed that poinsettia flowers turn grey as they dry and eventually crumble. Your hairspray solution might work if the flowers still have some moisture. Best of luck!
