(5,527 posts)I used a tripod-mounted Canon EOS Rebel T5i camera for both shots. The T5i is an inexpensive "beginner" camera.
The sun was shot with a Canon EFS 55-250 f/4-5.6, an inexpensive kit lens which was sold bundled with the camera. I used a very dark solar filter, an Ice ND1000000.
The moon was shot with a used Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG Contemporary, a mid-grade and comparatively (to the Canon model) inexpensive lens. I would have used this lens for the sun shot but don't yet have a solar filter that fits.
Both shots were taken in manual mode and manually focused. I used a remote shutter release (USB cable) to prevent shaking the camera.

(152,629 posts)I looked closely at both of them, and there were textual elements on both! Quite remarkable.
All those sunspots on a truly spherical sun. Wow. Great work.
And the crescent moon in the most beautiful phase, full of rich details!
Both of these beauties enrich our lives.

(5,527 posts)I went into the boring details in my response to Silent Type, above.
To say these photos enrich lives is quite the compliment!
