Yesterday afternoon on a lakeside trail: kinglets, geese and a feline greeter

Grubb Lake in Lancaster County, PA, is a former iron ore quarry that closed in 1907 and eventually filled with water. Some historical background is in the final photo of this series.

Canada geese

Golden-crowned kinglets are tiny and these two were difficult to photograph as they flitted about in the tree tops.

Black vulture

During my many years of walking trails near residential areas I've often encountered friendly cats, which I see as emissaries of the trail. This kitty greeted me near a trailside bench. When I sat down she immediately jumped on my lap and made herself at home. She was healthy, well groomed and wore two collars; I assume she lives at one of the nearby houses.

Fast forward a few centuries, and you end up with me.

Thanks for the pictures, and good morning.

I know the kinglets were hard to catch, but I think you did well, under the circumstances. I especially love the one where the golden "crown" on the bird's head is clearly visible.

Also love the bird houses, the shelf fungi, and everything else. And the kitty made my morning. What a nice surprise to be greeted like that!

You captured the fascinating story of this area so beautifully that my first impulse was to get in the car and drive there to see it myself. I loved "the kitty ending" very much! ❤️

Through the brown leaf are symbolic of the transition to spring—one day at a time. We had a large and beautiful display of the yellow flowers at the community garden, but alas, today was their last day.😥

After seeing the tree roots, I have decided to cast off my human form and be a forest elf. I want to rent that place. Next time you’re by, would you pick up a lease for me? Thnx.
