I haven't been able to use these babies since 2017! Today we finally have enough accumulation for snowshoeing (takes about a foot of snow). I snowshoed around the yard this afternoon, but tomorrow I'm heading to a rail trail. When the snow's too deep for walking, jogging or biking, I pretty much have the trails to myself, with the exception of an occasional X-country skier. Not shown are the ski poles I use for balance.

(72,667 posts)Snow is wonderful and a tonic to your soul. I was out in it today after almost 3 months in
the hospital and a nursing home. Loved it!
Dress in layers so in case you get too warm you can take something off. Sweating too
much in the cold isnt good.
Btw where do you live?
Mousetoescamper
(5,509 posts)other cold-weather clothing that I'll use on the trail tomorrow. Sincere thanks for your concern, though.
I'm glad that you're able to get outdoors once more. Welcome back!
I live in Lancaster County, PA.
Botany
(72,667 posts)Year round too. If you catch with the right meteorological conditions you almost always get some
fresh snow in the afternoon and the cabins are to die for. Very simple, wood stove
if you want to
use it
.. American Chestnut Paneling, no cell phone service, no tv, ravens calling, and miles of trails.
A simple kitchen is provided but I would bring some of your own frying pans. Pack your own food and
unless you want to no need to leave the park.
Grantsville, Md has a neat old bridge on the old national RD.
. US 40
. and lots to see close by too.
You can see where George Washington got his butt kick in the French and Indian war, Falling Water,
. If it is open
. and the porch in winter has great cycles for your drinks.
Enjoy your snowshoeing.

(5,509 posts)I prefer primitive tent camping but have stayed in park cabins. No cell service or amenities is a big plus.
I've been through Grantsville but don't remember seeing the bridge. Now that you've brought it to my attention I'll check it out the next time in Western MD or WV. The Falling Waters I'm familiar with is in WV. If you mean Fallingwater, the Frank Lloyd Wright house in PA, I've been there and posted a pic in the Photography group a few months back.
Thanks for the suggestions!
It's good to talk to someone about familiar places. Where do you live, Botany?
Botany
(72,667 posts)Casselmans Bridge in Grantsville built in 1813 and used to 1933.
I live in Columbus, Ohio
. Clintonville area. I found New Germany years ago and have been
back many times since.
The little park has some real history behind it and the cabins were built by the C.C.C. during the
depression
. And it has paid back the area many times over. The park isnt huge and you can
hear the trucks gearing down out on New Germany RD but the silence @ times is golden and the
chestnut paneling glows.
Btw the fire in the wood stove is great watching.

(5,509 posts)I'll be out on a nearby rail trail tomorrow.
What state?

(3,653 posts)Really cold tomorrow, and the snow is lovely and dry.

(72,667 posts)Get an early start and pack a lunch too.
My current condition is keeping of my x-country skis this winter but if I heal enough* I
might do a little flat ground skiing in March.
* they cut me in half to take out the bad stuff and I dont want to hurt to my belly or
legs. I just started to walk again about a month ago and for the last 2.5 weeks I can
make #1 & #2 like a big boy.
Enjoy the snow. Btw I love the crunch crunch sound of really cold snow or when the flakes
sparkle like diamonds in the moonlight or with the right sunlight.

(4,925 posts)I have had trouble renting snow equipment or buying special shoes, boots, for snow sports for years on account of my foot size. 16/17.
I know, insert all ready have snow shoes joke here....

(5,509 posts)My big snow boots also fit, but not without a lot of cursing.
I believe you're in Germany. Is the 16/17 a USA size?
Old Crank
(4,925 posts)However, England uses the same number system, but for slightly different sizes. I think that I am one size smaller in England. The European sizes are different. I am about a 52/53 depending on shoe type and maker.... If you by running/tennis shoes/trainers usually all the sizes are listed on the tongue.
48 is the largest size carried in most shoe stores, slightly large 13. As in the US I don't bother even looking. Zappos was my friend.

(152,475 posts)When you said 'snowshoeing' I immediately thought of the big round webbed snowshoes of my youth. How times have changed, and in this case, for the better!
Have a blast tomorrow!
