Then my #1-son told me it's about Columbine. It's actually dark. I still like the song although it puts me in a different state of mind now.

I always thought that the song was about school shootings. About a bullied kid who snapped and went after the rich, popular kids in school with his gun. (Pumped up kicks refers to the shoes worn as a status symbol.)

Anyhoo, I looked it up and basically it was supposed to be a look inside troubled youth and violence. It's more complicated than that but that's about the gist of it.

They wanted to bring awareness to the skyrocketing rates of teen mental illness and our gun culture.

I first heard that song when Foster the People were on Jimmy Kimmel, I think it was. I didn't catch any of the info on who it was, though.

So I ended up interrogated my young adult nieces until they figured out who their old aunt was talking about. I just really loved that song!

Then my husband ended up buying me the CD for a surprise. That was actually the first time that I listened to "new music" since I'm kind of stuck in a time warp listening exclusively to classic rock, more or less.

That's my big story
