Nothing he could say could ruin his reputation. But back in the day I've been lost and high on the streets of L.A. and at least a couple of times this song would come on the radio and somehow it didn't matter that I was lost

He's using drop D tuning for that. It's the perfect tuning for that song.
I play the song all the time. I should have thought of that!

Without Clapton who has gone stupid too. I noticed a difference but I didn't know what it was, I just knew it didn't diminish the song
