Producer Tony Visconti Recalls His Final Conversation with David Bowie

This article started with an exclusive in the NY Post, and then American Songwriter did a story based on the Post story.

Producer Tony Visconti Recalls His Final Conversation with David Bowie, Says Late Rock Legend Was Planning a New Album

The two stories are pretty similar, of course, with one based on the other. But I believe American Songwriter reversed the order of what Bowie said, so this is from the Post about David and Tony's last conversation, in late 2015:

“He said, ‘I’ve got something to tell you.’ And he was whispering to me on the phone,” Visconti, 80, exclusively told The Post. “I said, ‘I can’t hear you. Speak up!’”

“He goes into another room, and he says, ‘I’m going to be a grandfather.’”

Indeed, Bowie was blissfully anticipating the birth of his first grandchild from Duncan Jones, his son with first wife Angie Bowie.

“He told me that he was going to make another album he started writing,” Visconti said. “And I said, ‘Oh, I can’t wait to hear,’ and he goes, ‘Yeah, well, right after we get over the holidays, we’ll get together, and I’ll let you hear the music.’ But that was the last time I ever heard from him.”

More at the link, with Tony reminiscing.

The grandson David didn't live to see, Stenton David Jones (Stenton after David's father, Haywood Stenton Jones), was born July 10, exactly six months after David's death.

A couple of months earlier, Duncan told Hello! magazine about his last conversations with his dad, including this:

In his final days, David Bowie created a very precious memory with his son Duncan Jones. This week the Warcraft director opened up about his father's passing and spoke about a special moment that they shared together shortly before David's death.Duncan, who is expecting his first child next month with photographer wife Rodene Ronquillo, told E! News that it was his father who was given the honour of revealing the baby's gender as the family got together over the Christmas holidays.

"When we found out what the gender of our baby was going to be, we were able to get the doctor to write it on a card without us seeing it," he said. "Then I got to spend Christmas with my dad and he actually told us what the gender was going to be." Duncan, 44, revealed his baby news on Twitter on the one month anniversary of David's passing. Alongside a hand drawn picture, the filmmaker wrote: "1 month since dad died today. Made this card for him at Christmas. Due in June. Circle of life. Love you, granddad."
