A day in my life. I was singing If You Dont Know Me By Now and my black neighbors could hear me through the window and told my daughter " Christ your mother sure has soul. And my daughter asked what? They said they heard me singing and man your mom has soul when my daughter told me that I said I guess it is new to them to hear a little Italian woman sing with soul.

I can remember several occasions when I awoke in the middle of the night to hear this song playing. It was so mellow and dreamy, it made me feel like I was still asleep and imagining it.

About a relationship that just never had a chance and they knew it but kept holding on

Listening to the radio late at night was one of the ways I dealt with the depression from my parents getting divorced.

Waking up to the music of an unusual song was disorienting, but disorientation was better than gloom.

Maybe subconsciencely you heard the song and understood.. The reason why nothing had the chance to be good was that they were two completely different people starting from the life they had in their own family. " strangled by the wishes of pater" how he felt trying to live up to his father's wishes And "hoping for the arms of mater" wishing his mother would love him.. So the song was saying because of damage done long before his relationship there was no chance if it ever being good.

I don't know just thinking here.
