Sean Bianco's Opera Lounge. 7:00 PM Pacific on live365.com (free) Boris Godunov

https://live365.com/station/Bianco-s-Opera-Lounge-a27807

On At the Opera tonight at 7pm is a very intense 1966 live recording of Boris Godunov staring Bulgarian bass, Nicolai Ghiaurov.

The program is re-broadcast at various times.

Updated the phone because I got tired dismissing the nag every time I unlocked it, and I’m house-sitting and taking care of a neurotic dog. I’ll catch up later. Russian is extremely difficult for me to follow. I can do OK with Italian, German and French. There was an opera in Spanish a while back. It was awesome. Amazonas. In native Spanish, IIRC, wahtever that is. I might have sent a link to the fabulous costumes and sets.

Met Opera season ended today with Orpheus and Eurydice by Gluck.

Glad you’re enjoying it.

[Russian composer] was uh, heavy/boisterous-ish?

I'll check out 'Amazonas'. Thanx for the mention.

Orpheus n Eurydice is familiar.

A more calm and peace-filled balance of your night be unto you. 🤎

Listened to the outro on the program just now. Piece evoked a 'triumphant' kinda feeling with me.

And, Sean Bianco has a very lovely quality about him, his voice and persona. When closing the show and soon to return home, he tells his wife: "Honey, put the kettle on." So ole fashion n sweet ❣

He used to run the program from the studio at Sacramento state, but there was a fiscal fiasco and his show was dropped after some 20 or 25 years. Who’s counting?

So he had a commute back to the northern foothills, after midnight. He got set up with live365 and works from home. His wife is the producer, and programs the Tiki Lounge. So the kettle is right there these days.

I can’t imagine what to drink at midnight, unless it’s obviously decaf. I like Rooibos chai earlier in the evening. I never ventured into herbal teas. And then you’ve got to …

Shows used to start at 8 on the radio station, which was quite a late start for long operas. He’s a big fan of “Mio Babbino Caro”, Mario Lanza, and La Giaconda, which was the first LP he got. Also, tenors who hit high C. Repeatedly, as in Mes Ami’s from La fille du régiment. 9 in a row.

I’m a bass baritone so I won’t say more.

Sean usually plays the entire Wagner Ring cycle once a year. (Not all at once)

I won’t embed a video, but look up Anna Russel’s humorous analysis of The Ring. Here’s the text.

Spoiler Alert: Part 4:

Well this dreary lot of aunts, if they don’t tell this whole story right over again from the beginning. So actually you can miss out Parts 1, 2, and 3, and come in at the beginning of Göttedammerung, and you’ll be just as far ahead.

and as always …keep opera in your heart
