Zombie tools at the movies
Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" is released to theaters today and we're as jumpy as a tween juiced on Bieber spit. Normally, we wouldn't get hot and bothered over a film full of adolescent angst and the occult, but Mortal Instruments also features our blades on the big screen for the first time.
The story: about 2 years ago we were contacted by the prop-master for a Canadian production company that needed some blades for a movie project. We get requests like this all the time, but usually it's from student filmmakers with no money wanting to borrow our blades for a zombie project. These Canadian guys actually had a small budget....
They wanted us to make a bunch of custom blades to spec within a couple weeks. We said, "Yeah, no." But we convinced them that our existing designs would work just fine. They chose the Reaper, the Apokatana, and the Tainto, and we made them both live steel blades and a bunch of aluminum prop blades. (We tried to get them to use unsharpened steel blades, but the prop master said, "No, these are actors. You have to think of them as if they were children."
The prop-master told us the name of the movie, but it meant nothing to us. We hadn't heard of the best selling book series, so we assumed it was a b-rate made-for-TV production that would only be seen in Canada. It was a year later, when we saw a list of "The 10 Most Anticipated Blockbusters of 2013" that we realized it was a big deal. If we'd known, we would have charged them a lot more!
We'll be hitting the theater today and hitting on our flasks every time we spot a ZT design. It'll be a fun game -- we invite you to do the same
