Slow down and take a closer look.
I'm starting to learn that.
Not much to do on a Sunday, so I'm looking over the few local auctions on auctionzip. The closest one, about 20 miles, looks like ALL new stuff. I slow down and blow up every picture on the listing and there it is, hiding behind the table saw. I click on the picture of the drill press and yes. It sure looks like an industrial floor fan. I get there and check it out, a Vornado Model 21. I'm early and ask if I can plug in, go ahead he says, I do and it works. These floor fans are steampunk, atomic age, mid-century and industrial all wrapped up in one unit. No dents, just a little rust on the base. Bad ones go for $200 and nice ones go for $900 and up. I have the winning bid of $50. Look on ebay under vintage fans and you'll usually see 1 or 2.

(34,320 posts)Another site to use is graighslist, but not like you think. Use the listing you find to get in the door to find the real treasures. Lots off folks are downsizing and post a few items. Once in the door you can start to suggest the type of things you like or have luck with. A lot of the time I find way more and better deals once in the door.
