in place, like a piece of cloth ... maybe with some sand or something inside. And the bottoms have cut marks, like chopping nuts or something like that.

Sock darner it is, though many have more an egg shape than these two.

Or Darning egg. Some are shaped more like an egg. Not sure why.

Especially with smaller children's socks.

I think a flat one would be difficult to use.
I used the egg shaped one when I was young.
