from my trip to Charleston. The Chamber Music series of performances at the Spoleto Festival are always among my favorites. So for me, etude was not a weird guess.

I did look at the Festival schedule and saw there was lots of music. I'm a big fan of string quartets and played the violin all through school and stopped in my university senior year when I left to go to work full time. I was never that talented, it was something fun to do.

The Music Director of the Chamber Music series is a composer and the cellist of the Kronos Quartet, Paul Wiancko. He had really big shoes to fill, taking over from Geoff Nuttall after he died from pancreatic cancer. Geoff Nuttall, 1965–2022 | Spoleto Festival USA 2026 https://share.google/g5pmzKlIRxXeli6fw I couldn't bring myself to go to Spoleto again until this year after last being there in 2022. Nuttall was just a brilliant musician and very charismatic in his role as music director for the chamber music series.
The interesting thing I learned this year is that the pianist, Inon Bartanan, is the music director for a similar music festival held in La Jolla, CA -- where I went to high school before that festival began some 40 years ago--but I'd never heard of it, since I haven't lived in CA since 1988 and haven't been back for 10 years. Wiancko is the composer in residence this year for the La Jolla Summer fest. SummerFest 2026 | La Jolla Music Society https://share.google/orOOHSZfsheBg5hHo

It sounds like being at the performance in person was a real treat.
How tragic losing him. Pancreatic cancer is just lethal. My brother died from it at 63. This new drug recently in the news is certainly a step in the right direction - doubling survival rates. I hope more is done soon. This disease kills too many great people.

The La Jolla festival sounds pretty nice. One of my sons and daughter in-law live in Riverside, so a side visit to La Jolla when I get out there for a visit would be possible. However, traveling for me has been on hold lately because of my arthritic back. I just can't walk the distance inside airports to baggage claim, car rental places etc. I'm supposed to be getting some surgery soon since I can't get out to SoCal like this.

An etude (or étude) is a short musical composition designed to help a musician practice and perfect a specific technical skill. Derived from the French word for "study," these pieces bridge the gap between mechanical exercises and beautiful, performance-ready music.
