Well that's what it sounded like to me the first time I heard it and unlike most misheard lyrics it made perfect sense in context.
But I knew it was wrong because 1974 on AM radio.
Took me a while to find someone who knew the correct lyrics.

I eventually had to look the lyrics up on the internet to find out what he was actually singing...
