which generated a list of 14 possible answers (laity wasn't on the list!) and the only word on the list that hadn't already been an answer was loath. I didn't have a regular second word with TAL.

I think those in the 2 Club today had similar starter words. For me, the reasonable options were TRAIL, TRAWL, and LOATH. Trail and trawl have been used before, and I am loath to try a past answer until I've used any other possibility I can come up with.
