(54,436 posts)I was sent to an independent women's college, replete with debutantes from private schools.
The photo in the OP displays the genre of friends I hung with.

(112,985 posts)drugs (in general, given even the strains of cannabis were far less potent, opioids were not yet an issue/heroin was not overwhelmingly prevalent-- yes, some psychoactives, like LSD were in use, but in general less deadly drugs than today).

Just looks like a friendly crowd, deb. I figured people in the Lounge would get a kick out of the picture. Turns out quite a few have.

(4,069 posts)people today have feelings of hopelessness, helplessness and fear. The world is a cruel place now and we were more open, accepting and loving back in the 70s.

(15,389 posts)Even though I had long-ish hair and indulged recreational drugs, I wasn't confident hangin free & loose with a crowd like that. In high school I would have been categorized as a "head" but not a hippie. Academics and sports were much easier for me than social interactions outside my longstanding friends.

(11,756 posts)I was 13, a nerd, and had no friends.

(11,543 posts)I was a bit younger than that, but my memory of those times was that they felt happy, liberating, inspired.
Since then, a deliberate effort seems to have been made to disparage those times (which I believe were frighteningbut only to authoritarian PTB).

(75,952 posts)Probably not. I was a glitter boy. I didn't mix with the post-hippie crowd.

(10,382 posts)I was always hanging out with people older than I was... probably due to being bored with kids my own age.
(Yeah, I started partying kind of early. I quit bourbon when I was 16 because one afternoon I went to a Jr. class party and drank an entire bottle of Jack Black and then drove home and sat with my mother while she was getting ready to go to work at 11 pm. And, as I sat there, I realized something... I was stone sober. I had finished a bottle of bourbon like four-five hours before, and I was sitting there realizing that I felt nothing from it.
That was the day I stopped drinking bourbon.)
