A week ago tomorrow we had to have some digging done to bury some new drainage pipes for our basement sump pumps.
Well today on my way back from feeding the cat, who lives in our shed, I saw a mud covered horseshoe lying in the yard. The plumbing company must have dug it up and forgot to tell us.
It must have been from one of my grandfather's farm horses. The land that the house is on has been owned by our family since 1904. It's no longer a farm, but my grandfather used to farm it. He grew fruit, hay, and had cattle.
Hope it's a sign from Grandpa that my sister and I are in for some good luck. We could use some.

And, I too, hope that good luck is following you around, and will soon 'tag' you...

(3,962 posts)Unfortunately both he and my Mom's father passed away before I was born. It was nice to feel kind of a connection to him today, and at least I got to know my grandmother's.
I hope Good Luck for all of us here too!

(10,613 posts)It's as though your Grandfather reached out through time, to touch you, both physically and emotionally.
And he may well have. I do believe in signs. I've experienced more than a few in my day.

(27,430 posts)I love these kinds of connections to our past.
Here's mine: All four of my grandparents came from Ireland, and all of their children married fellow Irish Americans. I grew up in this wonderful country, and so even if we are only looking at Europeans, there's a lot of variety -- Irish, Danish, French, Italian, and so on. The first time I went to Ireland I finally understood how Irish my family was, because every single person I saw looked exactly like my brothers and sisters and cousins.

(15,735 posts)I you had a black cat cross your path, then immediately found a horseshoe, you would be on a roll of some sort.
She gets mistaken for a black cat but is definitely just a dark gray.

(232 posts)I think your grandfather would be so happy that you are still living on the family land. When you hang it in your house it will be a nice visible connection. One time my dad took me out to where my great uncle had homesteaded. I found a horseshoe (anmong other things)and it still hangs in my house. I was always told to hang them with the feet pointing up because it is already full of luck and you want the luck to remain and catch any other luck that comes along. Thank you for sharing.

(3,962 posts)My co-workers and friends always wondered why I never got a place of my own especially since though I loved my Mom, she loved to be argumentative with my Dad, my sister and I, especially me.
Then one of them came to the house after my Dad's funeral and she said let's just go sit outside for awhile. A few minutes later she turned to me, and said "now I understand why you never left, and your Dad held onto it. There is just so much beauty and peace here, and it's your connection to your Dad's side of the family." Thank you for saying my Grandfather would be happy.
That is wonderful you found a horse shoe and other things that connects you to your Great Uncle's homestead too.
