I'll start. We always had 2 side dishes I never see anymore......turnips and little cocktail onions in a cream sauce. Both are

this. I know my crowd would like it but I already make two things I don't like - overly sweet sweet potatoes and soggy bread. (I may have mentioned the soggy bread issue in some other posts/threads)

(6,250 posts)The sweet potatoes also had tons of brown sugar and marshmallows. I hated it then and would hate it now. Too damn sweet. I like my Thanksgiving meal to be savory.

I make a mean bourguignon. Occasionally, I'll even make my own noodles for it, but not every time.

So yes, I can see how they would work in any style of beef stew.
I usually buy the Birdseye frozen bags, because getting the skins off fresh ones is time consuming, even with the soak & squeeze method.
I tried fresh ones once. what a pain in the ass! learned that lesson about scratch cooking, at least.

🤔 Brown the beef in butter first. Trying to think if another vegetable. Some garlic. Some other ?herbs & spices. Ah, maaaybe a bit of red wine? And some tomato paste towards the end.

(36,104 posts)I was stupid and didn't pay attention to how mom made the oysters. It seemed simple, but I never got it down correctly. As for the corn, I live in an apartment and have no space to dry corn. I really miss both of them.

(35,409 posts)I dont miss those sweet potatoes from a can. I was in my 20s before I learned that a sweet potato could actually be bought in its original form and looked somewhat like a regular potato.

Sadly I married into a family where this was not on any menu they ever had I learned to never bring a mince pie because nobody liked it. Last year I got a craving and couldnt find a jar of Nonesuch anyplace except, would you believe it, Amazon.

My dad loved them. His mother was German so I guess they were traditional or something.

(95,570 posts)The main one that showed up at TG was shredded raw carrots plus raisins in orange Jello. You could add walnuts to it as well. Its actually a nice combo of flavors and textures, and easy to make.
Her other one was something she called Funeral Salad that showed up at some point after I left home. From the name I deduced that it was something she felt was fancy enough to take along to an occasion like a funeral. I was given the recipe but it always looked like too much in every sense: Raspberry Jello, cranberries, and cant remember the rest except there was a thick layer of cream cheese, probably with chopped walnuts.

(24,393 posts)Mom and me loved this dish, but no one else did and we always had too many leftovers and fruit doesn't stay good long, so we stopped having this afer mom passed 10 years ago. I have started making her Thanksgiving jello - which most don't like, but my sister and I love it and my daughter now likes it too. It's different but I love it - green jello with pecans, cheddar cheese, carrots and pineapple. Great fall colors and so refreshing!
