Indiana Republicans block new congressional map in rare break with Trump
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Indianas Republican-led senate voted against a redrawn congressional map Thursday that would have favored their party in the 2026 elections, despite months of pressure by President Donald Trump for a rare mid-cycle redistricting.
Twenty-one senators from the Republican supermajority and all 10 of the chambers Democrats voted down the redistricting proposal. Trump has urged GOP-led states to gerrymander their U.S. house districts ahead of the midterms to create more winnable seats for Republicans. Its an unusual move, since the district boundaries are usually adjusted based on the census every 10 year.

If Republicans will not do what is necessary to save our Country, they will eventually lose everything to the Democrats, Trump wrote on social media. Some Indiana lawmakers have also received violent threats during the debate over the last month. Half of the state Senate is up for reelection in 2026.

Competition is healthy my friends, said Sen. Fady Qaddoura. Any political party on earth that cannot run and win based on the merits of its ideas is unworthy of governing.

Kudos to the Indiana Republicans that voted with the Democrats to block the immoral gerrymandering.

After investing months of time, effort, and resources into Indianaâs redistricting scheme, Trump suffered one of the most humiliating failures of his second term.

Which is why it was hilarious to see him pretend otherwise. www.ms.now/rachel-maddo...

And yet, despite all of this, Trumps power grab flopped. After months of White House arm-twisting, the gerrymandering plan mustered just 19 votes with a majority of the Republicans in the state Senate voting with the Democratic minority against it.
It was one of the most brutal and humiliating failures of the presidents second term.
Except, to hear Trump tell it, this fiasco wasnt that big of a deal.

Trump: I wasn't working on it very hard. I wasn't very much involved
...But this unprecedented initiative has racked up some big losses, too. The scheme obviously fell far short in Indiana, and related efforts were rejected by Republicans in Kansas, New Hampshire and Nebraska, at least for now.
Whats more, Democrats are pushing back in ways the White House apparently didnt anticipate, with California poised to add five additional Democratic seats next year and officials in other blue states eyeing related plans of their own.
Meanwhile, a state court ruling in Utah has created a near-certain win for Democrats, and progressive activists have collected more than enough signatures to force a fight over the future of Missouris map.
To put it mildly, this isnt what Trump had in mind when he picked this fight several months ago.
