Opinion: Why ABC settled a case they knew they would win -- and why the Lincoln Project didn't

Since 2012, the U.S. Dept. of Justice has defined rape as bodily “penetration, no matter how slight… with any body part or object… without the consent of the victim.” To be redundant, no penis is required.

On May 9, 2023, a New York jury determined that Donald Trump had shoved his unwelcome fingers inside E. Jean Carroll’s genitals, after he pushed her against a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room wall, and that he later defamed her.

Months after Kaplan’s clarification of the jury’s finding, ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos said on the air that Trump was found liable for rape.

Given...that the jury found Trump had [therefore] legally raped Carroll, Stephanopoulos’s on-air statement was judgement-proof. And yet, to protect separate corporate interests of its parent company, Disney, ABC News decided to ‘settle’ the case, pay Trump $15m, and officially apologize for telling the truth.

It's hard to exist in America without somehow supporting Disney and, to a lesser degree, ABC. So, a boycott or similar actions are likely to be ineffective and unworkable. Since Republicans act like ruthless assholes, and yet continue to win, I think we Dems ought to act like assholes too - and win.

Cowardice in the face of our country's waning days should not go unpunished. We should start by keeping an enemies list, and intimate that entities on it will "be remembered" when Dems regain power, and that government contracts, expenditures and regulations will be affected accordingly. Disney is now on it.

Yes, it's unseemly behavior. But, Republicans do it - and it works. What we're doing isn't working, and we're losing. This is how our country operates in this new era. We must adapt.

Think ABC would have won too. But not putting them on an enemy list, at least yet. Silent Type Saturday #2
