Why did China hack the world's phone networks?

Back in October, WSJ and ArsTechnica reported that Salt Typhoon, from China, breached dozens of telecoms around the world.

DU has steadily posted a LOT on this.

This state sponsored attack bears ongoing re-examination in light of trade issues between China and the U.S. as Biden's administration leaves and Trump's occupation begins.
So hear me out.

1.
From [iThe Guardian Techscape Newsletter... ]

The hackers attempted and may have succeeded to crack the phones of Donald Trump and JD Vance as well as Kamala Harris’s campaign staff. Even the US’s wiretapping program was breached; call records stored there were stolen. A US senator called it the “worst telecom hack in our nation’s history”. The same week, UK telecom giant BT announced it had endured “an attempt to compromise” its conferencing service and circumvented it.

The group of hackers, sometimes known as FamousSparrow, has been active since 2020 and has gone after government organizations in Israel, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Canada, Guatemala and Burkina Faso in the past, according to cybersecurity firm Eset.
It has another favorite target... hotels. In all of those countries as well as the UK, France, Lithuania and Taiwan, the group has hounded the digital systems of hotels and stolen their data...

US national security advisers have urged their employees not to use normal texting apps but to keep all their communications to encrypted messaging apps like Signal, WhatsApp, and FaceTime. It’s good advice. Security agencies in Australia, New Zealand and Canada have issued similar warnings.

Is this hack part of an elaborate, coordinated response in the escalating trade war over chips between the US and China?
On Monday, Beijing opened an antitrust investigation into Nvidia.
Last week, Chinese regulators banned the export of minerals critical for the fabrication of semiconductors like gallium and germanium to the US.
Earlier this year, the US forbade the sale of the most advanced semiconductor chips to China. Washington, with regulatory power over Nvidia, TSMC and others, is seeking a geopolitical edge via AI, and you can’t make useful AI models without powerful chips.

China, broadly unable to either copy or dethrone Nvidia, is at a disadvantage.
So did China hack back in response? It’s possible, but the hacking of telecommunications networks isn’t closely related enough to the semiconductor industry to make the overture of “Give us your chips or else”. ...

My response to The Guardian is...
2.
"But" nothing. Salt Typhoon's continued hacking doesn't have to be closely related to the semiconductor industry. "Give us your chips or else" can be a win-win opportunity for Trump and Jinping.

Here's one scenario:

Consider that Trump just invited Xi Jinping to his inauguration, or at least said he would. That right there is a signal contrary to his previous position of being even tougher than Biden to safeguard U.S. microchip tech.

Consider Trump's need for respect on the world stage by turning his back on NATO allied nations and joining the Axis nuclear power club.

It's not far-fetched to predict he'd say his inauguration invitation 'outreach' is a safer path for U.S. security than Biden's current microchip trade ban with China.

And so, in exchange for Jinping ending Salt Typhoon attacks, Trump would let Jinping have microchips.

Then he'd believe he has both China and Russia's recognition. Excluding the 3-letter US Military Intel, his anti-democracy side across all 3 branches will believe him.

Our pro-democracy side will say that he's appeased yet another nuclear power autocrat in advance. And in fact he can, because Nvidia's Jensen Huang has also obeyed Trump in advance

Right after Biden
a) shored up U.S. production of the best microchip manufacturing in the world and
b) made the U.S. the start of the world's microchip supply chain.

Moreover, Trump will give up more semiconductor technology to Jinping (now in his third term in China) in exchange for Jinping helping Trump or his anti-democracy side win a third term.

We are hacking China, China is hacking us.

From what has been reported, at least some of the goals with Salt Typhoon included intercepting communications of government officials and agencies. It has also been reported that this is ongoing and that discovering and eliminating the threat has not yet been successful.

We are no longer in a world where we can act with impunity. What we do is going to be done to us.

Our intel people know this and we know this.

Thinking along the lines of 2028, though, this cyberwar back and forth can and likely would be leveraged by Trump and his maga republicans to keep winning under the policy pretext of "keeping America safe again." Not to mention the U.S. dealing with the collateral fallout with our already distrusting allies through Trump's continued attempts to gain favor with nuclear powers. All on behalf of anti-democratic cryptotechbro forces surrounding him.

Trump will give China whatever they want if they help Trump steal the WH again.

4. Like Jinping has. Trump's 3rd term or another maga win -- either way, anti-democratic forces stay in the WH.

And so Trump would allow the back and forth of cyberwar to continue. No matter the damageto the country... Trump's 3rd term or another maga win -- either way, anti-democratic forces stay in the WH.

As long as he and/ir his future maga bloc across the 3 branches have the nuclear codes and an immunized maga president, own the majority in congress and most of the money, .

Money and power.

Just like Putin is doing.

They care nothing about the damage, deaths, destruction they cause.
It is just collateral damage.

There was a coalition of 80+ billionaires behind Harris (to Trump's 53) on Nov 5, and that coalition needs to recommit over the next two years to owning media, owning pro-people messaging, bringing legal power to court battles, winning legislatures and governorships.

Money isn't everything, but when we see what's happened in this year's oligarch wars, we can see how much money can do with the right media, PR, legal and court systems already in place. .

So far no one has held Trump back at all.
The US government has folded. Judiciary and Congress.
And the US media is the PutinTrumpGOP propaganda arm.

8. No, we don't. One can hope that enough money is out there to recommit to ending this maga-Putin-media

four year nightmare. We only see a few legal allies readying for court battle, and our Democratic party congress people readying for legislative battle.

We also face an electorate that in large numbers didn't even vote; large numbers who don't want to deal with this (even in our party).
We could lose again if 54% of the electorate are below 6th grade literacy. Too many choose to believe "we've gotten through this before" as Mike Schmitt just said on MSNBC. It's likely that more of the electorate will personally struggle or despair to the point that they don't believe their election participation will matter anymore. ( I'm not one of them, but still, I lost thousands in donations to losing candidates.)

Though we don't know, might not know for awhile, maybe we'll know more by the midterms.
