The Face of the Democratic Party

Today on TAP: The next DNC chair will have a higher profile than usual. The two leading candidates, Ken Martin of Minnesota and Ben Wikler of Wisconsin, are both terrific.

Usually, the chair of the Democratic National Committee is a technocrat and not the face of the party. But this time could be different.

A number of names have been mentioned in the press coverage and in self-promotion, but it’s clear that the two finalists will be Ken Martin, 51, Minnesota party chair, and his neighbor, Ben Wikler, 43, who chairs the Wisconsin state party. Both are excellent party-builders, both are substantive progressives, and both have earned wide respect. The election is set for February 1

What’s the difference between the two men? Both are great party-builders. Martin, because of his long years of work with other state parties, has closer relationships with the membership of the DNC. Wikler has more of a public persona. And each has taken pains not to bad-mouth the other.

whose grasp of "kitchen table" issues and the ways banks, and insurance companies, and the food retailers rip off and gouge consumers is second to none.

Our main adversaries for the rest of this decade are a crazy 78 year old president and several crazy gazillionares. Senator Warren is a wise older lady who knows their scams and can speak clearly and expertly about the price of eggs, and why the banks are charging rates on credit cards that would embarrass Tony Soprano.

Katie Porter would work, too, though I fear the movers and shakers have read the tea leaves from the shattered cup and we will not see a woman at the top levels of the Party for some time to come.

That is unless Michelle Obama decides to take her own advice and jump into the fray in earnest. At this point little surprises or shocks me, though the Charles Kushner appointment as French Ambassador did see me checking for an Onion byline.
