U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that hes chosen Tulsi Gabbard, a former U.S. Representative from Hawaii, as his nominee for the countrys next director of national intelligence. Gabbard, whos been an outspoken critic of U.S. military support for Ukraine for years, would be the first Hindu and the first person of color to serve in the role if confirmed by Congress. She would also be the first presidential cabinet member whose name appears on Myrotvorets, an unofficial Ukrainian online database of people accused of colluding with Russia or participating in pro-Russian separatist movements. Meduza explains the controversy surrounding this site and what likely landed Gabbard on the list.
What is Myrotvorets?
According to The Times, The Myrotvorets database was created in 2014 by Ukrainian politician Heorhiy Tuka and a former State Security Service (SBU) officer using the pseudonym Roman Zaitsev, the latter of whom still runs the site today. With a name that translates to Peacemaker, the project purports to track enemies of the Ukrainian state. However, its faced frequent criticism and even criminal investigations for doxxing journalists and activists over alleged anti-Ukrainian statements, posting their names and personal information on the site alongside those of occupation officials, mercenaries, and war criminals.
Myrotvorets is not officially affiliated with the Ukrainian government. Despite Zaitsevs past SBU experience, he has maintained that the website is not controlled by the agency and does not receive state funding. In January 2022, he told The Times that Myrotvorets was created to solve the problem of ex-police, ex-military and some political figures, whose beliefs remain pro-Russian:
As time goes on the mission has changed and in the last three years the number of people getting placed on Myrotvorets for political reasons has increased. Now it lists those who protect the narrative of Russia.

Gabbard is a bizarre individual.
Does Ukraine have a list with any U.S. citizen or elected official's name on it?
Full stop. If this is some kind of extrajudicial kill/enemies list, we need to halt weapons and funding until it's explained.
In the United States, opposing all war, opposing specifically the Ukraine war or even supporting Russia are all lawful choices. This foreign power interferes in our election to possibly hurt Biden (with key disclosures, Joe hates war too) and now we learn about this list?
The list is ominous!!! How isn't this being revealed more widely?

(59,695 posts)Putin has declared war on Ukraine, so those who work for him are enemies of Ukraine.
It seems like a simple concept to understand.
2+2=4.
That's up to the US Gov to determine and prosecute. Not a foreign power who has no jurisdiction over Americans.
Sick of this strongman BS and the so called lovers
of democracy who support shit like this.

(59,695 posts)The comedy in your comment is that you think the US will stop Russian assets.
The US government now works for Putin.
Ukraine is a sovereign nation.
They can put whoever the hell they want on their bad list.
The US is no longer in charge of the world.

We're going to be ok. Russia is pretty incompetent, so is Trump. He didn't beat the government before did he?
I know it's hard to have faith right now. I'm hurting too. I feel gutted. Rejected even. But I'll never stop fighting for the values I hold true.
In justice, in equality, in the idea that all people ultimately want love and peace, to follow their hearts and live their lives to be the best version of themselves. 💙
You make many great points here. I just fear it could be used to repress elected officials, even by future actors ya know?

(59,695 posts)I assure you I could never teach the psychopaths in charge of our government a single thing.
None of us good guys can even imagine the totally of their evil thoughts.
You perhaps have missed that the entire US government folded like a lawn chair for Trump/Putin/GOP.
The guard rails all failed dismally. There is no rule of law, there is no justice.
The GOP sold us out to Russia for power and money.
I admire your optimism. It is a good quality.
I myself am cursed with a firm view of reality.
And you are quite mistaken that I will not fight. Or maintain my honor and self respect.
I come from a proud military family and we take democracy seriously.
