Latino men just didn't want a woman president

https://thehill.com/opinion/columnists/juan-williams/4980787-latino-men-just-didnt-want-a-woman-president/?tbref=hp

No, it wasn’t “the Economy, stupid.” Speaking as a Black man born into a Spanish-speaking family, let me tell you what last week’s election was really about. It was about millions of men — many with my Latino immigrant background, some with my skin color — who don’t want any woman, especially a woman of color, in the White House.

Trump won 55 percent of Latino men nationally. He won 46 percent of all Latino voters, a 14 percent jump over his support against President Biden in 2020. That was the highest for any Republican presidential candidate in five decades.

And the key was his success with Latino men. Trump’s support from Latino men jumped by nearly 20 percentage points, from 36 percent in 2020 when he ran against Biden, a white man.
(snip)

“I believe there is another painful factor that, though difficult to measure in polls, might help explain Trump’s appeal with Latino men: the allure of the ‘caudillo,’” wrote Leon Krauze in The Washington Post. “Trump represents a familiar archetype in Latin American history: the charismatic leader…the providential man, the messianic leader, deeply ingrained in Latino culture.”

It's like affirmative action for women, 120 countries around the world do this. It's actually a great example of how social engineering can affect a culture in a positive way, though as the below article points out, parity between men and women is still lacking in a lot of sectors.

Mexican men have more experience with woman politicians and lack some of the more toxic elements of machismo seen with American Latinos.

No Latin American country has passed more reforms expanding women’s representation than Mexico. In 1996, the country started with a measure recommending that at least 30 percent of political parties’ legislative candidates be women. In 2002, it became compulsory, and by 2008, the quota level rose to 40 percent. A 2014 amendment upped the level to gender parity for candidates for federal and local legislative seats. Along the way, a network of women from across civil society, academia, media, and government worked strategically to win support and close loopholes that made it easy for parties to run women candidates in districts they were likely to lose anyway or swapping a man into a post after a woman wins a seat. Mexican women went from having single-digit representation in the national congress 30 years ago to holding an equal number of seats today.

Obviously the US and states will never enact gender quotas, because you know, freedom and shit.

Claudia Sheinbaum won the highest vote percentage in an election since Mexico started free and fair elections. And about a dozen other Latin countries have had women presidents. But those Latinos did not have the right wing propaganda machine targeted at them.

The repubs certainly used sexism in their campaign, targeting men in general, and I read somewhere they did a lot of propaganda targeted specifically at Latinos.

I know that the "machismo" attitude is indeed a thing in Latin cultures, but I also know that many families who survive due to a single Latina mom, (or even those who are 2 parent households) can see with their eyes, and know in their heart, that women are the strength that holds families together. Same with black women.

And the boys that are raised by such women know this. They are not resentful. They are not culturally "programmed" to disbelieve it.

The unusually high number of Latin men that voted for Trump in this election is simply because disinformation ads were micro targeted at different groups better than the Russian disinformation that was widespread in 2016. Elon's money helped a lot in this regard. I'm guessing some of the other big right wing PACs put a lot of effort in those type of ads as well. Those are areas that people here wouldn't even be very aware of, because we weren't part of the intended group that they believed could be swayed.

Congratulations to Claudia Sheinbaum( yes she is also Jewish).

Millions of Mexican men voted enthusiastically for a well educated female environmental scientist. Since Mexico is still a macho culture maybe the Latino men won’t vote for a woman is just bad reporting.

We seem to have a lot of bad reporting in the US as well as columnists who don’t do much research

The more I think about it, the more I feel Kamala did nothing wrong. The very stupid voters did. And interesting comment about Latino men not wanting a woman president, be they white or not. Trump has always been acting like a macho man. I thought our male population was a lot more caring about women. Apparently they aren't.

Besides Black women, there is no cross section of our population - no cross section of our Democratic allies - where, when we break it down, we did not lose voters to racism and/or sexism.

I dream of seeing a woman President before I die. But we can't ignore the fact that there are racists and sexists among us. Among us Democrats. We have been taught that lesson twice now. Hopefully we have learned it.

She ran a GREAT campaign. If she was a white man with half her qualifications, she would have won in a landslide.

yes, too many Latino men voted for Trump. yes, too many white women voted for trump.

Let's stop focusing on them and instead focus on the real problem - white men. I'm so tired of white men getting a pass. Far more white men voted for Trump than any other demographic. Face it, one of the main problems (aside from billionaires) is white supremacy which most white men don't want to give up.

You're not at fault, but I'm sure many in your demographic, whatever it is, voted for the moron.

We need to admit there are racists and sexists among Democrats and among those who have voted for Biden or Obama. I hate to say this, but we need to run white, middle-aged, protestant, straight men for the foreseeable future.

The Inflation Reduction Act invested many $ in infrastructure—we all benefit, and the construction jobs are going to go largely to men.

There is a long list of historical legal advances that helped men as well as others.

Even policies seem as focused on women, such as to protect abortion rights, benefit men who would prefer not to support an unwanted child for X years, for example.

There is absolutely no reason why we should hold them to a lower standard than we hold white women, or any other group.
