McConnell says he 'won't be able to return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet'

Source: The Hill

07/12/26 7:15 PM ET

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Sunday said he won’t return to the Capitol for votes “quite yet” as lawmakers prepare to return from recess.

“As much as it frustrates me, this process takes time. And on the advice of my doctors, I won’t be able to return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet. But rest assured that, in the meantime, I’m not taking a break from the Senate business that matters to you,” McConnell wrote in a Sunday statement shared with The Hill.

“I’ve been working closely with my legislative staff on current issues, and with my Kentucky team who help me provide timely constituent services across our Commonwealth. I’ve also been keeping in touch with my Senate colleagues on the appropriations process, midterm politics, and everything in between,” he added.

The press release had a photo of the Kentucky senator with a copy of The Washington Post in hand while seated on a hospital chair next to his wife. McConnell has been hospitalized and absent from the Senate for over four weeks, following a medical emergency at his Washington D.C. home on June 14. He has not cast a vote in the chamber since June 11.

So what motivates these walking fossils - and I include Trump in that - to keep going?

Nancy Pelosi, then 84, fractured her hip abroad while on a junket and had a hip replacement while still overseas, in Germany.

That was 2 years ago in 2024 and she came right back after recovery and ran for reelection. But she decided not to run this year and passed the torch.

And here is one that got buried and I don't even recall it being plastered all over the news, having happened just 3 months ago -

Chuck Grassley, 92, undergoes gallbladder operation

Medical insurance keeps a close eye on hospital expenses. Normally an elder with a fall and no other problems would be discharged to inpatient rehab in a few days and then home with outpatient care.

My BIL is about to go through that. He had a bypass last Tuesday and arrangements are being made for some kind of inpatient rehab next.
