A driver who hit a protester outside Delaney Hall during a demonstration on Sunday has been charged by police, Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda announced Wednesday.
The 38-year-old Newark man was charged with assault by auto and issued a traffic ticket for reckless driving, Miranda said.
I commend the diligence of our detectives for quickly identifying this suspect and ensuring that he faces criminal charges for recklessly injuring a peaceful protester, Miranda said in a statement. I am extremely grateful that the victims condition is stable and that she rightfully reported the incident to police.
At 5:07 p.m., officers responded to Doremus and Roanoke avenues on a call of a pedestrian struck, Miranda said. Police found a woman who reported that while standing in front of the gate where drivers enter and exit Delaney Hall, she was waving a flag before she was struck by the driver of a red car.
