Starmer says Britain will ban under-16s from using a range of social media apps
Source: ABC News
Britain will ban children aged under 16 from using a range of social media apps, including Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube, to protect them from harmful content and excessive screen time, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Monday.
The plan was met with mixed reaction, with some praising Starmer for taking action and others questioning the effectiveness of a blanket ban.
YouTube and Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, warned Monday that a blanket social media restriction could push kids into unregulated online spaces.
Blanket bans push kids out of such curated, supervised, beneficial experiences and towards anonymous, less-safe services, a YouTube spokesperson said. Meta said a ban could drive teens to online spaces without any parental controls.

(20,993 posts)It's all garbage. It's become a sewer system of lies, AI porn, and a political cesspool, not to mention being a treasure trove of your personal information.
"Oh, but how will I connect with distant family members and friends?" The same way you always did before Fuckerberg invented Facebook to grade work women on their "hotness."
Jebus, wake up people!

As far as my own personal information, and as far as how I choose to connect with my friends and family, mind your own business.

(20,993 posts)You can't interact on DU like you can on social media, and our personal information isn't sold as part of their revenue stream.
The difference between DU and Facebook, Reddit, X etc. is like day and night.

(7,376 posts).... would ban Facebook, etc, and not ban DU? If you just name names the regulation would be considered arbitrary and capricious. You would have to come up with some sort of definition that would exclude the "bad" social media without excluding the "good" social media.
Social Media: Social media encompasses interactive digital platforms and websites that enable users to create, share, and exchange contentsuch as text, photos, and videoswithin virtual communities. It shifts communication from one-way broadcasts to interactive, user-driven conversations.
Sounds like DU to me.

Or at lest, that is my understanding.
Most social media does not have this.
My thanks to all who set up DU in it's beginning. A LOT of thought went into that - and to all who keep it going!

(7,376 posts)... it is one of the reasons DU is a superior social media site. I'm not certain, but I think Reddit has something that is a bit similar. They have "sub reddits" for specific topics, and those have "moderators" that can keep discussions on topic and within bounds. I guess this is less like the jury and more like the "forum hosts" on DU.

And DU is not social media. It's a chatboard.

What attracted librarians to the Internet? For some cybernauts, usenet, irc, and the other social media of the net are the hooks.
