(3,983 posts)Whatever you may think of the current ability of Russia's military at one time they were very formidable. Ukraine was the center of their brain trust. And the brains in Ukraine didn't just build weaponry. It was the engineering center of the entire USSR and through the years built some really good stuff. Lacking advanced western technology for most of the 20th century they built things very robust and very easy to repair. It's no surprise, to me anyway, that they are capable of a lot more than most of the world thought they could do. 20th century Soviet engineering took the KISS principle very seriously. There's a reason that principle works to this day.
