Mullin: No more money to pay DHS employees as of May

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said Tuesday his department will run out of money to pay employees salaries the first week of May, as lawmakers race to end a two-month shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security.
Appearing on Fox and Friends Tuesday morning, the secretary outlined that money to pay salaries came from the funds Congress allocated to DHS last year via President Donald Trumps One Big Beautiful Bill. But DHS has an extensive payroll burden, Mullin said, and if the department isnt funded, that extra pot of money will dry up early next month.
My payroll through DHS is just over $1.6 billion every two weeks, so the money is going extremely fast and once that happens, there is no emergency funds after that, Mullin said. Ive got one payroll left and there is no more emergency funds, so the president cant do another executive order because theres no more money there.
The incredibly candid admission about DHS financial straits comes as Republicans are trying to put forward a funding package that would fund most of the agencies under the Department of Homeland Security, while punting funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection down the line for a budget reconciliation package.

(411 posts)by not paying TSA again. All of us, the flying public, and all those poor TSA employees have already been through enough. Though I wish he'd stop governing by decree (his probably-illegal EO that nobody will challenge ordering TSA to be paid), at least SOME of those employees have been able to feed their families or pay their rent after weeks of uncertainty, only to have it snatched away again. All because these sadistic jag0ffs won't be forced to follow the already existing laws (including our Constitution) that purport to restrain ICE's murdering thugs.
My selfish reason is I have a very expensive trip booked to see my late husband's family and our friends in England in June and between this and worrying whether JetBlue will last that long, I am very concerned I'm going to lose my shirt on these travel plans.
I KNOW, and I feel guilcup whining when people are suffering SO many worse horrors than this, but (a) I worked REALLY hard for the money to pay for it, and if JB goes belly-up, I may not get it back and (b) that trip every year to my ancestral home is a spiritual pilgrimage to be with my loved ones on the anniversary of his passing that my soul NEEDS.

(7,483 posts)I'm well aware there are MULTIPLE downsides to this whole mess.
I'm just so pissed at the fucking Gestapo murdering inocent Americans in our streets.
I want all of those ICE assholes broke, out of work, or better yet IN PRISON.
I feel your pain. My advice would be if you make it over there successfully, JUST STAY!!
England is much safer and a whole lot more sane than America is right now.
We are being run by a demented, insane toddler hell bent on a scorched Earth policy. If I was able, I would emmigrate myself.
NO ONE, not ONE SINGLE PERSON, citizen or not, deserves this bullshit.
Best of luck in your journey.

(411 posts)I think I've mentioned in the past that my hubs, as a post-WW2 child of England, was terrified of fascism coming to his beloved adopted home. The number of times he made references to brownshirts and Kristallnacht and such...he was absolutely obsessed with/haunted by WW2. If he had to go, as much as I continue to suffer, at least I don't have to see his reaction to all of this.
Believe me, I've thought about it, but my ancestry is too far in the past for me to easily emigrate unless my job would let me transfer (we do have offices in England). But I am blessed to own a humble little home here in my native California, which so far remains the safest state, and my daughter, SIL and rescue cats rely on me too much. Plus I'm worried about the inroads Farage and his ilk have been making and, especially post-Brexit, worried the UK hasn't learned from our mistakes...
But thank you for your kind words. I appreciate the support even though I feel like I'm whining over such a privileged, trivial concern in light of all the suffering being rained down on millions in so many different ways. Fuck this orange blob and every one of his enablers.

(2,055 posts)And this is all happening because they refuse to make ICE--which Republicans love to call keep calling "law enforcement--follow the same norms and protocol as actual fucking law enforcement.
In typical fascist fashion, they want to have their cake and eat it too.

(407 posts)for wars it seems. The rich have plenty of money as well. I suggest we tap into that financial river and take what we need from the billionaires. We could fund peace with it. Just think, all those assets being used for the good of everyone.
