Eight Weeks In, Trump May Be Headed Toward An Iran Deal Similar To Obama's

WASHINGTON — As his “four-to-five” week war against Iran is halfway through its eighth week, President Donald Trump is now complaining that polls reflecting the war’s consistent unpopularity are “rigged” while seeming confused about peace talks that appear to be, at best, recreating a deal with Iran he ripped up during his first term.

The two-week ceasefire Trump announced April 7 is set to expire Tuesday, with negotiations to permanently end the fighting now reportedly including terms reminiscent of a 2015 agreement limiting Iran’s nuclear program negotiated by President Barack Obama’s administration. Trump tore up the deal in 2018, and a return to that framework has Obama alums wondering what, exactly, was the point in abandoning it in the first place.

“Exactly,” said Jim Townsend, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense in the Obama administration. “And how many people had to die to gain what we already had?”. Thirteen U.S. service members have died in Trump’s war, with hundreds more injured. At least 1,500 Iranian civilians have been killed. Robert Kagan, a top State Department official in Ronald Reagan’s administration, said Trump has actually blundered into a far worse situation, making Iran stronger than it has ever been.

“Taking what had been an entirely open Strait of Hormuz, recognized as an international waterway enjoying freedom of navigation, and placing it in Iran’s control going forward,” he said. “Any deal that leaves Iran in effective control of the strait is a strategic disaster, but that is almost certainly where we are headed. This will turn Iran into a major global power for the foreseeable future.”

and even if there is a deal that similar to Obama's, we will always be bargaining from this point forward from a weak position.

Obama did without dropping a bomb or shooting someone.

4. So, where is the delegation of Democratic Congresspeople visiting foreign governments like the rethugs did with Obama?

Where is our delegation that visits a foreign country to request that the foreign government not listen to our current regime and, in fact, should be completely resistant to anything that the US government suggests?

(Yes, I know... it is a rhetorical question that I hope will get some discussion going as to why we are not doing such things.)

I mean, there is precedent...

Considering that the rethugs once sent a letter to Iran signed by 47 members of that party, in which they basically told the government there to ignore President Obama and his efforts to negotiate a deal with them. They literally committed treason by trying to undermine the President and the entire United States.

I see that a few went here and a few went there.

When are 47 of them going somewhere?

When are 47 of them going to write a letter to another country telling them not to make deals with that orange gibbon?

That was what I was referring to.

As to the last part... no, but the absence of results is certainly the result of absence.

there were a parade of people going back and forth there doing just what you mentioned - basically (in diplomatic terms) - "Ignore this madman, we're not buying what he's selling". I gave you links to the most recent junkets of those that were actually covered and reported by the media. They tend to go on those trips during the spring and especially their summer "breaks".

But again, "absence of evidence is NOT evidence of absence".

IOW, many of these trips are not covered by the media but the members of Congress DO generally put that info on their websites, which is "evidence", but obviously only if you bother to go look for it.

I know on DU, it's usually not "good enough" and the trusty flow chart ends up applying -

And this administration is likely OK with that as it makes our oil cheaper compared to Gulf of Arabia sourced oil.

10. But it will be Trump's name on it, not Obama's. That's what he disliked about first deal.

I don’t know if Netanyahu will agree though.
