A shooting at Mexicos Teotihuacán pyramids has left at least one person dead and several people injured, Mexicos security cabinet said Monday.
According to preliminary information, a man fired shots at the popular archaeological site, killing a Canadian woman before taking his own life, the cabinet said on X.
Authorities say they have seized a firearm, a bladed weapon and live cartridges at the site.
At least six people were injured four by gunshots and two by falling and they are receiving medical attention, the State of Mexico said.

(2,295 posts)It is the location of one of the world's chakras (spiritual energy centers).
Do I believe the Earth has chakras? No. But, if I am wrong, and the Earth actually has energy centers, Teo would certainly be one of them.
Regardless of whether one believes in geo-chakras, it is especially ironic that a shooting occurred there.

(6,091 posts)I have climbed the steps to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun. An amazing view from there. You can see so much. But it was an arduous and somewhat treacherous climb. Steps are very uneven. I can see where people could fall and even die on those steps. So sad that someone chose such a beautiful and peaceful place to do kill and do violence.

Among the gunman's belongings was a photo modified by artificial intelligence showing him alongside the Columbine attackers, according to a state official who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to address the media.

Taken to hospitals after the Mexico attack were six people from the U.S., three from Colombia, one from Russia, one from Brazil, one from the Netherlands and one from Canada, the local government said. The youngest person who was hurt was 6; the oldest was 61, Mexican authorities said.

(12,370 posts)It's a very chill place for a tourist site in Mexico. It's such a massive place that it rarely seems crowded (except atop the Pyramid of the Sun, which can get busy especially if you've got a fear of heights like I do). It's really a very stunning place with new parts of the site uncovered nearly every year and spectacular murals in the museum that look as if they were painted yesterday, not 1800 years ago. It was the first major place I visited when I began my doctoral studies on Indigenous Mexican history and to me it was like being in Disney World would be for a kid. I was enchanted.
I'm heartbroken for the tourists who died or were injured; they, like millions of others, just wanted to see and learn. It's a shame some psychotic maniac couldn't have just offed himself instead of having to destroy others.
