US issues sanctions waiver on Russian oil sales again

Source: MSN/France 24

The Trump administration on Friday issued a one-month sanctions waiver allowing the sale of Russian oil and petroleum products already loaded at sea, despite the treasury secretary indicating two days earlier that Washington would not renew the measure. The move comes amid efforts to ease global energy prices, which have surged following the Iran war and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest move allows for the purchase of oil and petroleum products that have been loaded onto any vessel as of Friday, through 12:01am (0401 GMT) on May 16.

On Wednesday, however, Bessent had told reporters that the United States would not make such an extension for Russian oil – or Iranian oil.

Leading Senate Democrats, including Chuck Schumer of New York, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, condemned the decision as a “180-degree reversal,” arguing that it sends a mixed signal at a time when Russia continues its military campaign.

“This decision is shameful,” they said in a joint statement, linking the move to ongoing Russian attacks in Ukraine and warning that it could prolong the war.

“At some point, the only solution left is letting Moscow ride to the rescue and dramatically damaging the sanctions architecture the West has spent years building,” Erickson told RFE/RL on April 17.
