House Democrats will try anti-corruption message to gain traction against Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) — Days after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was ousted by an opposition campaign with an anti-corruption message, Democrats want to try the same playbook against President Donald Trump before the midterm elections. House Democrats launched Wednesday what they call a task force to overhaul ethics rules and protect access to the ballot. They also want to highlight the Trump family’s business dealings and the president’s transformation of the federal government.

The task force, which will include a mix of progressive and moderate members, could become a central part of Democrats’ messaging as they try to claw back control of Congress from Republicans.

Rep. Joe Morelle, top Democrat on the House Administration Committee and a longtime ally of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, will spearhead the effort. He said Jeffries “fears that we’re losing Americans’ faith and trust in government and institutions” because so often “decisions are made based on the personal interests of the members or the president and with little regard for Americans.”

Morelle floated a ban on stock trading for all members of the executive branch, Congress and federal courts as a policy. He added that a code of ethics and term limits for Supreme Court justices were other possible proposals.

Also, focus on AI! Did we ever consent to the radical societal transformation the Broligarchy is imposing on us? SO many critical issues, but I think both of those could resonate with all but the completely unreachable MAGA (brain)dead-enders.

others who agree, too. We were neither consulted nor agreed to having our jobs, our entire livelihoods, completely upended by "smart code robots" and we have an inherent distrust based on past experience. Add to that the damage being done to the planet by data centers and we *should* have a say in all this. It's corruption from the highest to the lowest that no job numbers can make up for. I like they're going to go with an anti-corruption message, but they should really get their head screwed on straight about what we really care about first... and then follow through with a few wins. One of the things we're most angry about is their actions don't match their words. We no longer want to take the "high road".... we want to see charges brought, trials carried out, and sentences achieved through REAL jail time... not fines like slaps on the wrist. Democrats are tired of being seen as peace-loving hippies that can be bought with a few daisies. We've grown up. We're adults who've paid the price all our lives. We now want real remuneration. We want our land back. We want our bodily autonomy back. We want our rights back. We want our humanity back. Democrats are still the best team in the country, and I'll vote and fight for them to the death. But the leaders do need very much to listen to and act for the rank and file, like the firebrands WE are. I think sometimes they forget that the longer they're in their seats. There are exceptions like Raskin, Pelosi, Whitehouse, Duckworth, and more than a few others. Lord knows, we've got a deeper bench of good people than the repubs do on our worst day! But they need to show every day that they're the same firebrands that their constituents are.
