US moves troops to hotels in Middle East - seemingly in violation of its own rules of war: report

Source: The Independent

Wednesday 01 April 2026 17:37 EDT

The Pentagon may have violated its own rules of war by moving troops from U.S. bases, targeted by Iran, to hotels and other civilian locations in the Middle East region, the New York Times reported.

Since the start of the conflict, initiated by President Donald Trump’s missile strikes, Iranian forces have been targeting U.S. bases throughout the region. Bases, such as the Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia and the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, have been damaged and at least a dozen service members have been killed.

As a result, troops have been moved to office spaces and hotels throughout the region where they’ve been working remotely, military personnel told the New York Times last month.

If true, this could mean the Defense Department has violated a U.S. Law of War, which says officials must use their best efforts to distinguish military forces from others to mitigate civilian casualties and property damage. The Independent has asked the Pentagon for comment.

This tells me they have zero defense mechanisms in place to protect these bases. Probably something they should have thought of before starting a war that makes no sense

Just change the labeling and it becomes OK. Your third eye doesn't have to be open to see through that one!

Everyone who works in these offices or hotels will know who the US military personnel are. Military members will stick out like a sore thumb. It will be relatively easy to disrupt operations, communications or both. It depends on the continuing good will of the Gulf states who, at some point, might not feel their investments in Trump are protecting them.

not only that they'd do it, but that the entire world would know where they are.
A friend of mine's son joined the army before Nov2024. I'm worried about him. Tried calling her but no luck. I can only imagine what she must be going through right now.

Data centers, desalination, bridges, suburbs… infrastructure like WWII. Talk of nukes and terror campaigns at parks… ghastly.

War doesn’t care. War doesn’t ask. War eats what it wants until nations break. War drives the world mad. War laughs at rules.

The very best of us think we can train it, socialize it, and apply ethics and conventions it will heed.

It cares little what either of us want.

There are good reasons war is personified.

No way this ends up like the attack on the US Embassy in Lebanon back in ‘83. Just can’t see that happening…at all. Nope.
